Where are the public restrooms in the French Quarter?
There are a few, and they're the ones to know.
- The Jean Lafitte visitor center at 419 Decatur Street, run by the National Park Service
- The French Market, the open-air market at the Decatur Street end
- Jax Brewery, on the first floor among the shops and food counters
- Legends Park on Bourbon Street, down the stairs at the back
Can you use a bar or hotel restroom without buying anything?
Usually. The big hotel lobbies are open to anyone and locals use them routinely. Bars generally don't mind either, though a place with live music may have a cover charge or a drink minimum at the door, which is a different barrier. The Hotel Monteleone on the 200 block of Royal Street is a reliable one.
What's open late in the French Quarter?
The bars, and that's most of it. Bourbon Street runs all night and its bars go with it, so late at night a bar is nearly always closer than anything public. Caesars New Orleans at the edge of the Quarter is open around the clock too.
What if I can't find a bathroom in time?
It's worth avoiding. New Orleans treats public urination as lewd conduct, which is a criminal charge rather than a small fine, and the Quarter is where it gets enforced. Duck into a bar.
